WordPress / Feedburner RSS Issue resolved

For a LONG time, no images have been appearing in the RSS feed for www.quirkycars.net. Now, it’s not as simple as it looks, as the standard WordPress RSS is redirected via a plugin called Feedsmith, to Feedburner.
So, either the images were being removed by feedburner, or they were not there in the output from the site.
So I disabled the plugin, and examined the output directly. No images. (http://www.quirkycars.net/feed). Damn.
Checked the Settings->Read options, correctly set to “Full Text”. No option to block images.
After looking around on the web, I FOUND the problem: Change the RSS address to http://www.quirkycars.net/?feed=rss2 : The images ARE present in that one.
So, then: change the Feedburner RSS feed address to [websiteaddress]/?feed=rss2, and we are sorted. Don’t forget to re-enable Feedsmith..
Sounds simple, but this has taken a LOT of detective work..

Squidoo Revisited

Ive spent a bit of time recently updating my Squidoo lenses.
What the hell is that? I hear you ask..
Well, it’s a kind of Web 2.0 website development system.
You create a Lens (site) by picking modules, and organising them to form a site.
You then configure the modules, and add your content. I find that I get a steady stream of traffic from mine.

I (now) have a separate lens set up for each website, with links to the site, and an RSS feed from it. Lots of pictures, lots of links.

Each site also has eBay and Amazon affiliate modules..

Oh, and apparently my original Squidoo Lens (Quirky Cars) is now a “Featured” Lens…

I’m watching the referrals in GA Stats. May be interesting..

RSS Error: Blank Line(s) at start of XML – Solution.

I noticed that suddenly I wasn’t getting my daily e-mail message from one of my sites.
Now, these messages are generated automatically via feedburner, so it’s either feedburner, or gmail, or the actual site RSS feed.

Checked GMAIL to make sure the messages weren’t ending up in the SPAM. Nope.
Checked Feedburner. Stats looked OK, but “REACH” had dropped to zero about four days ago.
Damn. Feedburner handles the twitter feed AND email subscriptions.

Further investigation showed that the RSS feed was no longer valid. Blank lines at the start of the XML.

Tried the two main solutions:
fix-rss plugin. Nope.
Then the whitespace remover thing. Nope.

Bit more research, and then I came across a post that suggested looking in the THEME’s functions.php file. Alarm bells! I edited that about four days ago..

Loaded it up, and it was a mess. I must have been asleep when I edited that.
Re-loaded the file from backup. (You DO have a backup, right?)
And away we go. RSS is back. Feedburner is back.

RESULT!
