RSS Error: Blank Line(s) at start of XML – Solution.

I noticed that suddenly I wasn’t getting my daily e-mail message from one of my sites.
Now, these messages are generated automatically via feedburner, so it’s either feedburner, or gmail, or the actual site RSS feed.

Checked GMAIL to make sure the messages weren’t ending up in the SPAM. Nope.
Checked Feedburner. Stats looked OK, but “REACH” had dropped to zero about four days ago.
Damn. Feedburner handles the twitter feed AND email subscriptions.

Further investigation showed that the RSS feed was no longer valid. Blank lines at the start of the XML.

Tried the two main solutions:
fix-rss plugin. Nope.
Then the whitespace remover thing. Nope.

Bit more research, and then I came across a post that suggested looking in the THEME’s functions.php file. Alarm bells! I edited that about four days ago..

Loaded it up, and it was a mess. I must have been asleep when I edited that.
Re-loaded the file from backup. (You DO have a backup, right?)
And away we go. RSS is back. Feedburner is back.

RESULT!

Social Media Integration | Facebook | Twitter/Tweetmeme

Had a bit of a successful day yesterday.
Flushed with the success of my attempts to properly integrate with twitter/tweetmeme, I thought I’d have a go at Facebook as well.

I now have facebook integration on three sites: “like” buttons, login with facebook id, etc, nice.

Getting the tweetmeme and “like” buttons to display nice was another story, however.
In the end, I had to disable automatic placement, remove formatting for tweetmeme, and manually place the buttons in the template code, inside a table.. Sorted.

Plugins used: tweetmeme button, “Simple facebook connect” + login, publish etc..

WordPress/Tweetmeme

Installed tweetmeme buttons on one of my sites.
Bit of a nightmare!
First, they didn’t appear at all. Tried their solution for that. (wp-footer) No good.
Tried inserting javascript directly. No good.
Traced problem to “mod_rewrite” rules used by supercache.
Removed rules (not used anyway), and NONE of my post links work 🙁
Reset permalinks settings, (-> default, then -> custom) which rewrites the htaccess file, and we’re up.
.. and we have tweetmeme buttons. Excellent!

Banner Ad Rotation | Replace datafeedr with "ad rotate" – NOW!

For years, I’ve used DATAFEEDR to manage my banner ads, and used Google Calendar to manage expiration dates. Not ideal, but it worked.
Finally, I decided to do something about it. I was seriously considering writing my own system, based on Datafeedr, but with start & end dates etc.
I’ve learned though, to check what’s already out there before jumping in with both feet and re-inventing the wheel.
So I had a look around and found “Ad Rotate”.
It does everything that datafeedr does, ads & groups, but also has a concept of “blocks” of ads. Ads have start and end dates, and can be disabled. There are “fallback” groups, in case no ads are live. Tremendous! And it’ll even e-mail me when an ad is about to expire.

The system was installed, ads copied from datafeedr, new template tags inserted, and we are up and running in half an hour.
