How to get enough space to update or reinstall Windows 10 on a 32GB laptop..

This was my daughter’s machine. Asus e203n with Windows 10 and 32GB solid state drive. No space for updates or reinstall. No space. Full stop.

No way to upgrade the drive. Windows installer wouldn’t play ball with external drives. Deleted everything I could.

I found the solution: disable hibernation mode..

You can’t just delete the hiberfil.sys file, you need to do it properly..

Open a command window, in admin mode..

(type cmd in search box, right click, run as admin)

powercfg /h off

On an Asus e203n, that freed up 3.5GB, which was enough to enable the “fresh install” option.

A bonus is that all the ASUS bloatware is also removed. Maybe enough space to install zoom and teams?

You can also “compact” the windows system.

compact.exe /compactos:always

This will take a while..

Anyhow, I already replaced this with a Chromebook. It’s no good for me, as it’s too small (storage + screen), so it’s off to eBay..
