Cut and paste | Attribution | Backlinks | CopyLink

We’ve been looking into the issue of site visitors using cut and paste to “steal” content. Not on this site, particularly, but on others.

The issue is that many visitors don’t use the built-in “share” functions – they simply copy and paste content into social media, or more often, e-mails. The problem with that is that the site doesn’t get anything back from this – no backlink, nada.

There are a couple of (paid-for) WordPress plugins which address this issue: Maxblogpress “bring my blog traffic back” (bmbtb), and “Covert Copy Traffic”, for instance.

Look a bit closer, though, and there is a FREE plugin called “copylink” which does most of the same. It may not be as polished, but hey, it’s FREE.
Copylink offers tracking facilities as well, so you can actually see who is copying, and what the actual content is. If someone IS seriously abusing your content, you can then block them.
Awesome!
We’ve rolled copylink out to most of our sites, and are monitoring the results…

We have no problem with visitors sharing content – if we did, we wouldn’t publish it on the open web. But we DO want the content to be attributed to our site.

Squidoo Revisited

Ive spent a bit of time recently updating my Squidoo lenses.
What the hell is that? I hear you ask..
Well, it’s a kind of Web 2.0 website development system.
You create a Lens (site) by picking modules, and organising them to form a site.
You then configure the modules, and add your content. I find that I get a steady stream of traffic from mine.

I (now) have a separate lens set up for each website, with links to the site, and an RSS feed from it. Lots of pictures, lots of links.

Each site also has eBay and Amazon affiliate modules..

Oh, and apparently my original Squidoo Lens (Quirky Cars) is now a “Featured” Lens…

I’m watching the referrals in GA Stats. May be interesting..

SEO TWEAKS

A week or so ago, I replaced “all-in-one-seo” with “ultimate seo” on all my wordpress sites.
Didn’t change any settings.

Google analytics says that my traffic increased by 140%, 30%, and 56% on these sites.

I went and twiddled with the settings on Friday, and they’re all showing a big drop. 🙁

Free Web Hosting Kills your traffic!

About a month ago, I moved one of my less-well-performing sites (www.q292u.com), to free hosting with 000webhost.
Despite good traffic, I simply wasn’t getting any conversions)

Well, today, Google Analytics confirmed what I suspected: traffic is down around 75% on both sites. This is because the pages take so long to load, if at all.
(You’ve probably seen my posts on terrible ping-times..)

The one site I moved from 000webhost to paid hosting (www.supercars-for-sale.com) has increased traffic by 25%.

Free Web Hosting Kills your traffic.

Enough said.
