Wordbay Beta

We are now running Wordbay Beta 1.4.9 on http://www.cheapcarbooks.com
After some teething troubles caused by file permissions, it’s up and running. Thanks for sorting that out, Mark..
Currently using the default_black template.
Before you go running off to WordPress.org to get this plugin, don’t bother. The only version available there is the legacy 1.2.7 one. Wordbay has now moved on, and is only available to Wordbay subscribers.
The new Wordbay website will be up soon (Mark says), so watch out for that.

In the meantime, check out the new listings format at http://www.cheapcarbooks.com

Google Slapped?

More weird behaviour from Google Analytics and/or EPN.
My new website http://www.supercars-for-sale.com generated THREE times more EPN than my usual best-performer http://www.quirkycars.net lst month..

This month, supercars is nowhere in the list, getting hammered by three other sites… Traffic is nigh-on zero.
What the hell is going on? Have I had the Google-Slap?

🙁

Banner Advertising

Have a look at my websites (Go on..)
www.q292u.com  www.nervejam.com  www.supercars-for-sale.com   www.cheapcarbooks.com |  www.quirkycars.net

One thing they all have in common is banner advertising. Some of these are affiliate banners (eg Google Adsense), and others are actual paid banners. (eg American Muscle).

The banners are located in many different positions, from top of screen, to top of posts column, sidebars, etc.
Mostly, I have done this by manually editing the WordPress theme files. Trust me. It’s a pain.
Even worse, I have to do it all twice if there’s a mobile theme in use as well.. 🙁

However, there is a FANTASTIC plugin called Max Banner Ads, by MaxBlogPress.
It costs $47. That’s a one-off payment, and can be used on as many sites as you like.
(Yes, I know there’s a free version, but that has a “powered by” link under each instance. You don’t want that..)
With Max Banner Ads, you don’t need to edit the theme files, it inserts adverts wherever you want automatically!

Here’s the bumf from MaxBlogPress:

Statistics have long shown that….

“Rotating your advertisement banners can defeat banner blindness and increases CTR.”

But..

One of the issue about banner advertisement on WordPress blog is the banner ad management.

Normally adding banner ads will need you to edit your WordPress theme, mess with lots of codes and even then you won’t have the result as you want.

This is pretty tedious and time consuming if you have to go through all the codes just to add some banners.

Wouldn’t it be great if:

You had the power to easily place your banner ads in any position you want to on your blog?
You could track your banners, find out how good they really are doing?
You could rotate your banners in multiple spots and transform your WordPress blog into advertising gold.
Above all what if you didn’t even have to worry about editing your WordPress theme to do all of this?

What if all of this could be done with one powerful and easy plugin?

That is where Max Banner Ads comes into play. Adding, controlling, and tracking the banners on your blog has never been more easier or more powerful with the Max Banner Ads WordPress Plugin.

What are you waiting for? Check it out. Try the free version. Then when you get tired of the “Powered by” link, pay your $47 (or whatever offer is on – there are often discounts), and upgrade to the PRO version..

Here’s the Link again:

You may also like to try some other MaxBlogPress FREE plugins. (Some of which I use on my sites – Especially MBP Ping Optimizer..)

Happy New Year!

Happy New year to everyone.

Had to upgrade all my WordPress sites due to an urgent security update over the Christmas break.
Grr..
Fortunately, it’s easy with WordPress..

On a more positive note, www.supercars-for-sale.com is reporting another massive rise in traffic (136%).
Good start to the year..

Nokia E71 – Out of Memory – Solution!

I use a Nokia E71 smartphone for mobile internet access.
It kept reporting “out of memory” errors. Unlikely, given the 8GB sd card..
Couldn’t even text or e-mail.. 🙁
Turns out Symbian only uses the internal phone memory by defauly (128mb..)
Solution is to clear out texts, e-mails and bookmarks, and then change all settings to point to the sd card.
eg Communications>Messaging>Options>Settings>Other..
Make sure you only install apps on the memory card, never phone memory, and watch out for PDF files getting saved in phone memory..

WordPress "unable to establish a database connection"

Have you just uploaded a new version of WordPress via ftp?
Did you overwrite wp-config.php ?

You now have two options: restore the file from the backup you made before the upgrade.
You did make a backup, right?

Alternatively, use the File Manager in your control panel (CPANEL, PLESK, etc), to edit the wp-config.php file.
(It’ll be in the root of your WordPress install)

You need the following information:

Database Name
Database User Name
Database User Password
Database Host Name. (Usually “localhost”, but NOT always. It’s not on 000webhost for instance)

On Cpanel, all these values can be read from either “mysql” or “phpmyadmin”, apart from the password. You may need to set a new password. On Plesk it’s under databases – database users. Again, you may need to set a new password.

Now enter these values in the correct places in wp-config.php and save the file.

Next time, take a backup.

 and that’s it.

Free Web Hosting Kills your traffic!

About a month ago, I moved one of my less-well-performing sites (www.q292u.com), to free hosting with 000webhost.
Despite good traffic, I simply wasn’t getting any conversions)

Well, today, Google Analytics confirmed what I suspected: traffic is down around 75% on both sites. This is because the pages take so long to load, if at all.
(You’ve probably seen my posts on terrible ping-times..)

The one site I moved from 000webhost to paid hosting (www.supercars-for-sale.com) has increased traffic by 25%.

Free Web Hosting Kills your traffic.

Enough said.

NerveJam.Com : replaced built-in search system with Google Search

NerveJam.Com was the only one of my sites where the search box was not actually an easily-replaced widget.
Turns out that the search box was hard-coded into the header.php file.

Generated a custom Google (Adsense) Search engine for this site only, with results to appear on a local page.
Simply replaced the search code in the header code with Google’s (Adsense) generated code, added a “Search Results” page, and pasted Google’s (Adsense)target code into it. Bit of tweaking later, and that’s it.

Why bother? Monetization…. 🙂
P.S. this will only work if your site is indexed by Google. Otherwise you get no results..
