Sites down (again) – Jab Web Solutions | Unscheduled Downtime

All three of my sites hosted by Jab Web Solutions are down again this morning.

www.quirkycars.net
www.supercars-for-sale.com
No message from their support people.
Would they have told me about it, or hoped that I wouldn’t notice?

Yesterday, I was doing backups of these sites (files and database). It took literally hours. This is NOT normal.
I also did backups at Unlimited. Ok, so the databases are not as big yet, but they were instant.

Now, I don’t like the idea of all eggs in one basket, BUT it’s looking like I’ll be shifting all my stuff to Unlimited before the Jab hosting runs out.. and since they use EXACTLY the same control panel (PLESK), then the only difference will be cost (lower) and speed (faster).. Win Win..

Mobile Access to Websites.

Now that I can get my WordPress sites 100% functional (php safe mode off, fast cgi on), I’ve revisited the Mobile issue.

I’ve now implemented WordPress Mobile Pack on all but one of my sites (Advertising obligations on that one..)

It’s excellent. It detects your mobile device, and serves up the mobile version instead of the desktop. It even has a mobile admin theme.. There’s an option to use m.yoursite.com as well. May have to look into that..

New-Style Posts

I’ve been experimenting with the post styles on some of the sites.
(I got the idea from www.johnfoxxandthemaths.com)
The idea is that each post has the Category (or tag) as a prefix.
For example, a “news” item would be “News – The world ends tomorrow”
My best example of this on www.nervejam.com. I’ve used a different class to highlight the Prefix. Looks really good. It became necessary, as so many posts were being syndicated from the OMD site, without mentioning OMD. Well they do now!

I’ve done something similar on www.synteknik.com, but as this is a more minimal theme, I’ve left the styling alone.

Best of all, it’s really easy. In it’s simplest form, it’s a copy-and-paste job. Copy the category bit, and paste it into the line that displays the title.
I’ve now done it with three different themes. And one of those is a weird one..
Simples.

Website Glitches

1. Feedwordpress triggered a security alert every time I tried to add a new feed! One e-mail to Unlimited, and it’s sorted..
2. Ran into a couple of file rights problems on www.q292u.com
After installing a new theme via wordpress.org, I found that I didn’t have rights to upload modified versions of the files. One e-mail to unlimited, a quick tweak, and that’s it.

There’s a theme emerging here, isn’t there? These guys are bloody good..

Looking for New Web Hosting..

I have 6 domains, 3 of which are hosted with jab web solutions..
two of the others were hosted with 000webhost until they CANCELLED MY ACCOUNT without explanation or warning.. probably because I was monitoring their downtime – it’s appalling!
The other is parked.

So, the mission: find a deal which will host:

At least 6 Domains
At least 1 mysql database per domain
At least 600MB / domain diskspace
Sensible bandwidth allocation (prefer no restriction)
Possible upgrade to Reseller at low/no cost

The contenders:

Upgrade Existing Jab Web Account.
es-hosting.co.uk (I went to lunch with the owner last week)
Unlimited Web Hosting

Jab Web have come back with their R25 package, which has only 2GB diskspace allowance. Which was huge 5 years ago.. And it’s £10 a month! A shame, as I’ve always rated Jab Web Support.

es-hosting suggested basing my package on their £5/month student deal (hmm.. ) Not actually the best deal, but I live in the same town as the owner. I could bang on his door if my sites go down..

Unlimited have offered me £2.75/Month Unlimited everything deal… REALLY Tempted.. Their datacentre looks awesome.. and there’s the option to upgrade to an Unlimited Reseller account for £10/Month. Take THAT, Jab Web!

Turns out it was a result of “Spammers” affecting the server. DDOS attack?
The support person was deffo the new lot. (Simon)
Would I have been informed if I hadn’t raised a support ticket?

All three of my core sites (hosted with Jab Web Solutions) on their “Gamma” server are down, and have been since at least 12:15PM..
Jab Web Solutions recently changed hands.. I hope this isn’t a taste of things to come..
(I already have a couple of contingency plans..)

New Feedburner feeds

Created several new sub-feeds for www.quirkycars.net These are:
classic-mini
3-wheeler
muscle-cars

These are used to power my signatures on relevant forums. I’ve changed the link addresses to point direct to the relevant categories and tags. (This is how I found the wp-ebay-ads fault.)

Plugin problems!

Ran into a problem on www.quirkycars.net where only some of the posts in a category or tag were being displayed.

The last post returned would be incomplete, and the “older posts” link etc would be missing.
traced the fault to wp-ebay-ads plugin. I’ve had to disable it as it makes the site unusable.

Fault reported to author.

Account Quota Exceeded!

Started getting warnings about exceeding my disk quota at Jab Web on Saturday..
I normally have about 1Gb free space, so something was clearly amiss.

Couldn’t find anything obvious (no single big files), but NerveJam.Com was reporting 1.7 Gb disk space..
Deleted all mail in case it was the database backups.. Got another message on Sunday.
Contacted support..

Monday, all disk quotas back to normal.. No message from support. Baffled.

However, I have taken the opportunity to install and run the “clean options” WP plugin on all sites.
NerveJam.Com had over 1000 junk entries in wp-options..

and I’m looking at “auto prune posts” as welll..
