Asus eee PC | New Keyboard

The “h” key on my eee pc didn’t work.
Bought a brand-new replacement one from eBay for £9.39 inc p&p.
Installed in 2 minutes flat. (3 spring-clips at the top and one ribbon-connector.) Sorted.
The new one’s a “Windows” keyboard, but the machine’s a Linux one. No problem. The only difference is the new one has a Windows key instead of a “home” button. I can live with that.

More Troubles at Jab Web

One of my sites has been up and down all weekend. “Internal Server Error”, and humungous load times.
It’s hosted on Jab Web who have been having some “server problems”.

GA stats say that these problems have killed traffic stone dead on that site. Nobody contacted me to say there was a problem. Would I ever have known if I hadn’t checked the site? 🙁

Asus eee PC (LInux) | Add a "START" Menu..

Missing the familiar Windows “START” menu?
Easily resolved.

Fire-up a terminal window.
Work>File Manager>Tools>Terminal

You should now see:

/home/user>

Do This:

/home/user> sudo bash [enter]
(This opens a command line shell with rights to do ANYTHING. Be careful!)
Now do this:
/home/user>mkdir /home/user/.icewm [enter]
/home/user>cp /etc/X11/icewm/preferences /home/user/.icewm [enter]
You have just created a directory in your user area, and copied the default preferences file into it.
Now do This:
/home/user>nano /home/user/.icewm/preferences [enter]
(This loads the preferences file into the “nano” text editor..)
Find the line with “TaskBarShowStartMenu”, and changes the value to 1.
(Use F6 to call the find function)
Hit Control-X and overwrite the existing preferences file.
Now type “exit” [enter]  twice, and reboot the machine.
You should now have a START menu.
Excellent.

Asus eee PC (LInux) | Fix WPA Wireless Connection | Install Updates

Info:
The Asus eee PC (Linux) uses Xandros Linux. Installing and updating programs is done via “repositories”.
There’s a file which specifies which repositories to use. By default, these are the ASUS repositories.

Firstly, get yourself connected to the internet via a wired connection.

Now fire-up a terminal window. Work > File Manager > Tools > Terminal.
This will give you a command line with a “/home/user>” prompt.

Do this:
/home/user>  sudo apt-get update

Wait until it’s finished, and then do this:

/home/user> sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

This will take about 5 minutes.

Then type “exit”, and reboot the machine.Disconnect the LAN cable.

Now log in and hit the “Wireless Network” button under the “Internet” tab. Select your wireless connection, enter the WPA key, and connect. You may also want to select the “connect at boot” option on the far-right drop down.

That’s it. You’ll now find that you have a number of options in the “Update Programs” option under the “Settings” tab. Update everything. Especially the Anti-Virus. (It’ll take a while..)

Asus eee PC (LInux) | Restore Factory Defaults

** PLEASE NOTE – THIS WILL WIPE ALL YOUR DATA **

I can’t believe how FAST (1.5 minutes), and easy this is..
Firstly, you need to know that the eee pc has a restore partition built-in, so you don’t need to faff about with Cds, DVDs or USB sticks. All you need to do is trigger the restore procedure.

On boot-up, keeping pressing F9. You should then get a boot menu with three options. Option 3 is “Restore Factory Settings”. Select it, and hit enter. Now say yes to anything it asks. When finished, it’ll reboot.
Enter a new username and password (twice).

That’s it. Honest.

Now you will want to install updates..

* What? F9 doesn’t work?
On boot-up, select F2. Switch OFF silent boot. Switch OFF quick boot. Save settings.
Now reboot and try F9 again. Sorted.

Asus eee pc (linux)

I acquired an old eee pc 4g recently. Needed some bits, which I have now sourced.
However, I couldn’t get it to connect to my talktalk wireless broadband. 🙁

The problem appears to be the WPA2 encryption on the router. It works fine for the MSI netbook, and even the allfine wince (ouch) machine. But not the eee pc.

The solution appears to be a BIOS update, available from ASUS, which will require using the wired connection. Which DOES work, I’ve tried it. However, I stupidly tried the “update software” icon on the desktop, and now all updates are greyed-out.

A bit of digging later, I found LOADS of useful info on the web. Going to try manually updating the machine, and I don’t expect too much bother.

All I need then are filezilla (which I KNOW is available for eee pcc, and a source code editor in the style of crimson editor. Unfortunately, not available on Linux.. Any suggestions, anyone?

Talking to one of my (day-job) colleagues, I discovered that he used two eee pcs (Windows) to run the entire musical performance at a recent charity event, both machines running the fulll version of Sibelius! Impressive..
Apparently, FOUR people asked where the “orchestra” were.. 🙂
They even had a conductor, conducting the eee pcs…. classic.

SEO TWEAKS

A week or so ago, I replaced “all-in-one-seo” with “ultimate seo” on all my wordpress sites.
Didn’t change any settings.

Google analytics says that my traffic increased by 140%, 30%, and 56% on these sites.

I went and twiddled with the settings on Friday, and they’re all showing a big drop. 🙁

Supercars For Sale – New Features

www.supercars-for-sale.com

A little while ago, I added manufacturer profile pages, but these were only linked to from the “profiles” navigation link. I have now added automatic hotlinks on each RSS post

It works like this,: as a new RSS post is created, a custom field called profile_page is set with whatever the correct profile page is for that feed. Eg “Audi”  In the main-index template, there is a piece of php that uses the custom field to build a link to the profile page.

So an Audi post has a link that says “Click here for the Audi profile page..”.
If there’s no value set, the link doesn’t appear. Neat.

The profile pages now feature related ebay listings via the newly-installed Wordbay plugin. No, not the one from wordpress.org. That’s obsolete. This is the new one, available only to members of thewordbay.com

(I am an ACTIVE member of thewordbay.com forum..)

Backup Problems at Jab Web Solutions

Prior to upgrading WordPress, I always back-up my files and databases.
My last backup was Monday, so I thought I’d take a backup before the upgrade.

However, the backup at Jab Web ran extremely slowly, and then stalled at 85%.

So I made the decision to just “go for it”, knowing that I had a complete backup from Monday, and could easily restore anything posted since then.

Fortunately, all went well. No Thanks to Jab Web Solutions (again)..

WordPress Upgrade

Upgraded all my sites to WordPress 3.0.5 today.
No problems encountered, either at Jab Web, or Unlimited.

Took the opportunity to have a tidy-up on the plugins as well.
Deleted all useless inactive stuff, and upgraded everything apart from Wordbay.

The wordbay version on WordPress.org is NOT the latest. The latest is only available to members of www.thewordbay.com
