No More Jetpack!

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

It was.

Automattic.com “locked-on” to one of my JetPack-using sites, firing thousands of requests, and resulting in my hosting account getting suspended. I’ve had to remove it from ALL sites, just in case.

Not Impressed! 🙁

P.S. This happened some time ago, I’ve just realised that I hadn’t mentioned it, and I don’t want to give the impression that JetPack is working fine – it’s NOT!

Better WP Security – So Secure It Doesn’t Let ANYONE In! | Internal Server Error

Better WP Security (BWP)

I’ve been using this plugin for ages without any problems.
Until Now.

TWO of my sites went down with mysterious “Internal Server Error” messages.
Even the usual URL/license.txt routine generated the error, so it was clearly not a WordPress problem exactly.

I actually went as far as logging a support ticket with Unlimited Web Hosting, but I was already suspecting the htaccess file.. Sure enough, there was an error (a missing word) in there, caused by BWP.

I corrected this, and it’s sorted.

So, here’s how to fix this problem:

  • FTP (or file manager) into your site.
  • Open .htaccess
  • Look at the bottom end of the file.
  • There will either be a missing command (you can’t miss it – it’s obvious), or a chopped-up word. Again obvious. Insert the magic word (it’ll be the same as the line above or below it), or correct/delete the chopped-up word.
  • Save the changes.
  • Access your site.

Social Bookmarking Buttons

Have you noticed the social bookmarking buttons on this site?
Thought so!
Impressive, isn’t it..

You see, the problem with social bookmarking is that no-one wants to be the first to “like” something. It’s a “herd mentality” thing.

It’s a fact, that someone is more likely to “like” something if someone else already has.

So that means it’s a vicious circle – no-one will click unless someone has already clicked. Damn.

So how do we get around that? You’ve already seen the answer. This plugin displays either “REAL” or “Fake” likes, so you can set it to display “fake” like totals until the number of REAL likes hits a threshold.

(On this site, it generates a random number of likes until the REAL number hits 30, the it displays the REAL number)

The animated “share” counter also gets you past their “like button blindness” – this is like “banner ad blindness”, where visitors don’t actually notice the banners/buttons anymore.
If you hover over the share button, it shows the likes from the individual sites – again, impressive!

Want this on YOUR site?
Simple: BUY THE PLUGIN (We did)..

It’s a simple wordpress plugin installation job, and the configuration is just as easy.
If you buy the plugin from our link, we’ll even help you install it!

Jetpack! WordPress Plugin

I’ve just discovered the joys of the “Jetpack” WordPress plugin.
It’s enabled me to get rid of all the separate “social button” plugins, the “contact-form-7” plugin, “mobile edition” and goodness know what else!
It’s also given me traffic stats in the admin area, a wordpress.com “subscribe” button, backup facilities.. blah blah.. you get the idea.
It’s written by the same people behind WordPress itself, (Automattic).
Do yourself a favour – use it.

DIGI AUTO LINKS | SERVER MELTDOWN!

Last week, I started playing with the excellent DIGI AUTO LINKS (DAL) wordpress plugin.

It’s an all-singing, all-dancing backlink-building system, which uses WordPress Pingbacks.

I had it installed on 4 sites, and I’d noticed that things were running slowly, with the occasional “Internal System Error” thrown in for good measure.

So I contacted the excellent support people at Unlimited Web Hosting to see what was going on.. Unusually, they wanted to RING ME.. unheard of!

I was tied up with other things for several hours, so when I finally got free, I checked my sites, and found that THREE had been suspended, (for server-hogging, I found out later..)

I worked out that FEEDWORDPRESS (FWP) was creating batches of posts that DAL was trying to process instantly, resulting in server meltdown.

We fixed the problem by pausing the DAL cron jobs, bringing the sites back up one at a time, and deactivating the DAL plugins. Normal servive resumed.

CONCLUSION: DAL doesn’t work for me.

It’s an excellent product, and would work fine on a normal blog, where there is a NORMAL level of posts. THAT doesn’t describe my sites..

Anyway, no worries, as there’s a full guarantee with DAL. I got a full refund.

Eliminate 404 errors! | Conserve Link Juice

Earlier today, I saw, and was impressed by a brilliant idea:
Why not trap all 404 errors (wrong URL), and redirect to a page related to what was typed in?
So there is no “404 error” page, and search engines don’t think there’s a dead link.

Initially, I thought “redirect 404 errors to homepage”. That’d work, but the visitor would probably not get what they were looking for. Search engines would be happy, though.

So I thought: why not redirect to a page related to what the visitor typed as the URL? You could use tags and categories to help in this.

There’s a PAID-FOR plugin that does this. It costs $97 for a multi-site license! 🙁

So, I had a look around, and found the “Smart 404” WordPress plugin.. Which does exactly what I described above. It misses *some* keywords, but it’s pretty damn good, and it’s free.

All my main sites now use it..
